This fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs depicts scenes, people and events from everyday life in Frome and its surrounding villages. The town derives its name from the Welsh word ffraw, meaning running water, referring to the river on which it stands. Essentially an industrial town, Frome was a centre of the woolen industry from the fourteenth century. Amongst this interesting sequence of photographs are images of the area's mills including Wallbridge, Spring Gardens and Rifford. Some of Frome's other important industries feature including the workshop of John Webb Singer, the brass founder and Samuel Rawlings & Sons, card manufacturers. The Lamb and The United were the two major breweries based in Frome and are both represented in the book. Many memorable individuals are also captured in photographs, including W.F.H Randolph, the vicar of Frome (1899-1938), Revd R.W. Church, Dean of St Paul's, and Mrs Jane Sinkins who ran a successful drapers shop. This book will appeal to all who know Frome and the surrounding area and would enjoy a nostalgic look at how things used to be.
