Human Resource Management: Functions, Applications, Skill Development is a core text for introductory HRM courses in departments of Management, Business, and secondarily, Education and Psychology (I/O Psych). As the subtitle states, this new text will present the important HRM concepts and functions, but will take the students to the next two levels in actually teaching students to apply the concepts through critical thinking and develop HRM skills they can use in their personal and professional lives. Planned Approach and Features Interactive presentation of material: Text material presents HRM concepts and functions followed by application material so that students can break up the reading while applying the concepts and getting feedback. The boxed items will not promote a passive reading of an example; they will engage the student to come up with an answer. Self-assessments within the chapters will also allow students to check their understanding as they go. This is especially helpful for the online learner.The text is broken into ochunkso so that the professor can present a concept with a short lecture, followed by interactive applications and skill-building exercises (discussed below and throughout the prospectus). Each section of the chapter has major heading with concepts with application material within that section. A note indicates when review questions, communications skills, and skill building exercises can be conducted, which are found at the end of the chapter. Applications: The text includes 6 types of applications. Skill Activities: The text includes 4 types of skill activities. Teamwork/Collaboration in Class: The applications can be discussed in groups, and the skill-building exercises are both individual and group based. Teamwork can be part of the course. The IM will include a discussion of how permanent teams can be used, along with a peer evaluation form to help eliminate the free-rider problem.Visual Learning: The text will be visual, with many exhibits, the IM includes PowerPoint slides, and there are video links available to adopters of HRM.oHow-too Orientation: The text will include behavior model steps for handling common HRM issues (i.e. coaching and discipline, and the exercises give clear instructions. The IM gives recommendations for exercises, with suggested times for each step.Assessment: Accrediting associations want assurance of learning and outcomes assessment. This text will be the first HRM package to include a test bank that covers application and skills questions to assess outcomes. The IM also includes an Introduction that discusses all the activities possible use and grading.
