This occasional Paper reflects on the importance of personal care and personal attributes needed to deliver medical care and gives a theoretical account of why personal care is of worth and needs protecting, the nature of the person that general practice is seeking to support and the knowledge needed to do so. The author proposes a model of interpretive medicine, which is the critical, thoughtful, professional use of an appropriate range of knowledge in the dynamic shared exploration and interpretation of individual illness experience, in order to support the creative capacity of individuals in maintaining their daily lives. The author outlines the exploratory, interpretive nature of the interaction that is the GP consultation. The author proposes that the aim of general practice should be to support patients in living their lives.
