It may seem rather surprising that De Koninck, one of the only Belgian architects in whose work Horta's space continues to find a (muted) echo, states that he never visited at the time the interior one of Horta's houses, and that he deduced their new structure solely by a reading of the facades. Although De Koninck's own home was presented at Frankfurt as an example of Existenz-minimum, his architecture cannot be described as functionalist; instead, it materialises, on however small a scale, a social faith which was constantly disappointed.
