The Latics were founded as Pine Villa FC in 1895. When rivals Oldham County folded in 1899, Pine Villa moved into their stadium, the Oldham Athletic Ground, and changed their name to Oldham Athletic. They were runners up in the Football League in 1914/15, just before the Great War, but were relegated from the First Division in 1923. They reached the 1990 League Cup final and won the Second Division title in 1991, securing top flight status a year later and becoming one of the founder members of the Premier League. However, Oldham were relegated after two seasons in the top flight and have played at the third tier of English football ever since. Division One has brought much drama, including near insolvency in 2004, and the club now sit comfortably mid-table. In Oldham Athletic: A Pictorial History, Tony Bugby, having watched the Latics for the last forty years, as a fan, newspaper reporter in the glory days under Joe Royle, and now as the club's website editor, gives us a potted history of the club from founding to the present day.
