Producers: Christopher Thorn; Brad Smith; Eric Rosse. Recording information: 2004. Featuring a backing band of seasoned session musicians who have played with Beck, Tori Amos, and many others, WRECK OF THE DAY is an accomplished debut by Anna Nalick. The native Californian penned all the lyrics to WRECK herself, and she exudes an old-soul introspection that is normally expected from artists twice her age. Even from the album's opener, "Breathe (2 AM)," it's clear that Nalick is a major-league talent who's in it for the long haul. Possessing an airy voice that falls somewhere between Fiona Apple's fragility and Alanis Morissette's steeliness, the 20-year-old singer/songwriter relates tales of not fitting in ("Citadel") and trumping insecurity within a bad relationship ("Consider This"). Spotting the influences sprinkled throughout these 11 songs also makes this record an engaging listen. The yearning vibe and layered harmonies of "Satellite" bring to mind the Cranberries, while "Forever Love (Digame)" uses a mix of harmonium and piano for an Amos-like spin on romance. Anything but a WRECK, this album introduces Nalick as a formidable young performer.
