For the most part, the 1970s was almost as good for Bob Dylan fans as the 1960’s had been – Blood On The Tracks, Rolling Thunder, The Basement Tapes, Desire and Street Legal had all delighted the cognoscenti and most were looking forward to what would come next. But by the end of the decade Dylan’s adherence to fundamental Christian beliefs split his fan-base in a manner as dramatic as his ‘going electric’ had done 15 years before – but this time God took the place of electronic amplification.

The following 10 years would prove to be Bob’s most controversial decade, during which he lost and gained fans in equal measures, but which also, upon reflection, contained numerous moments of glory and even his least popular records contained songs that have subsequently been judged among his finest. This film looks again the period between 1978 and the dawn of his ‘born again’ period’ and takes the Dylan saga up to 1989 and the release of Oh Mercy, thought by most to be a complete return to form.

This film includes rare Bob Dylan footage, live and studio versions of his finest tunes from this era, archive interviews and contributions from his closest allies including; Shot of Love producer Chuck Plotkin; the same album’s first engineer Toby Scott; chief engineer on Infidels and Empire Burlesque, Josh Abbey; Daniel Lanois’ assistant producer for Oh Mercy, Malcolm Burn; first engineer on Oh Mercy, Mark Howard; music collaborator and lead guitarist on Empire Burlesque, Ted Perlman; legendary Jamaican rhythm partners who featured on Infidels, Sly and Robbie; guitarist and bandleader for Empire Burlesque and Knocked Out Loaded, Ira Ingber, Derek Barker, editor of the world’s foremost Dylan journal, ISIS; Scott Marshall, author of Restless Pilgrim: The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan; Clinton Heylin, author of Behind The Shades Take Two, Robert Christgau, Village Voice music editor and Rolling Stone journalist; Anthony De Curtis, former editor of Rolling Stone; Nigel Wiliamson, author The Rough Guide To Bob Dylan; Johnny Rogan, esteemed British music writer, co-author of The Odyssey Guide to Bob Dylan and many others…
