Collection of four classic horror movies. In 'Nosferatu' (1922), F.W. Murnau's silent vampire film based on Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', Count Orlok (Max Schreck) decides to move from his ruined castle to the city of Bremen and hires real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to make the arrangements for him. But Orlok is also the vampire Nosferatu, and when he takes a shine to Hutter's young wife Ellen (Greta Schröder), it seems that the worst is indeed possible. In the silent Gothic drama 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1923), adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo, the hideously deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) lives in the bell towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He strikes out viciously at the city folk after their constant taunting, but is saved from their wrath by a beautiful gypsy girl, Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller). When she is accused of stabbing her lover, Quasimodo spirits her away into the bell tower, but their friendship ends in tragedy. In the 1925 silent film version of Gaston Leroux's novel, 'The Phantom of the Opera', a masked figure dwells beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House. He is Enrique (Chaney), the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine (Mary Philbin) into a diva. Finally, 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' (1954), adapted by the BBC from George Orwell's novel, is set in a futuristic, state-run society controlled by 'Big Brother', where love is outlawed. When employee of the state Winston Smith (Peter Cushing) falls for Julia (Yvonne Mitchell) he is tortured and brainwashed for his crime.
