As might be expected, the long-form music video of Enigma's MCMXC A.D. album is full of fairly esoteric imagery. There is plenty of nature, with an emphasis on rock formations rising out of the sea (sometimes topped by a figure carrying a staff). Architecture from out of the Middle Ages is favored, sometimes populated by a lone man in a red robe with a cowl. Images are superimposed over each other, and lots of smoke wafts in and out. Things turn racy during "Principles of Lust," which features the occasional exposed female breast and many significant glances. Later on, footage of boys jumping into muddy streams is repeated over and over. Mr. Enigma, Michael Crétu himself, fades in and out during "The Rivers of Belief." All of this is to create appropriate atmospherics for the trance-and-dance music and portentous proclamations. For the most part, it looks like a long commercial for perfume mysteriously lacking the appropriate product placement. Following the 40-minute film itself, the DVD includes special features of individual music videos for "Sadeness," "Mea Culpa," "Principles of Lust" (minus the nudity), and "The Rivers of Belief." Billed as "Enigma Interview" is a 16-minute EPK (electronic press kit) for the third Enigma album, Enigma 3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi from 1996, which features music and video footage from that album interspersed with Crétu's reflections on his career and worldwide success. ~ William Ruhlmann
