As live punk DVDs go -- and there have been a plethora of them thanks in large part to Kung Fu's c]The Show Must Go Offc] series -- Give 'Em the Boot is a cut above the rest. Featuring the Hellcat roster, and lensed by label owner/Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong, the disc has few faults as it gives Joe Strummer fans a parting glimpse at the punk hero as he tears through the old Clash classic "Rudie Can't Fail" plus wares from his final days ("Minstrel Boy") with exuberance and skill. While Armstrong finds time for his lesser-known but rather capable stable mates (F-Minus, HorrorPops, Nekromantix, and U.S. Bombs), it's clearly Rancid's movie and rightfully so. From the crackling "Ruby Soho" to the riotous Iggy Pop collaboration "No Fun" -- not to mention glimpses of offshoot groups like Transplants and Lars Fredericksen & the Bastards -- the DVD rarely disappoints, although one would think Hellcat's Celtic punks the Dropkick Murphys would have had landed more than one mere live clip. A tactical move, no doubt, to urge fans of the latter to also pick up their equally entertaining 2004 offering On the Road with the Dropkick Murphys. Regardless, Give 'Em the Boot is a must-have for any and all self-respecting punk fans. ~ John D. Luerssen
