Mike Oldfield's vast body of work is largely summed up by those outside his fan base with their memory of Tubular Bells as heard in its incarnation as the theme to the film The Exorcist. Of course, that is here on this gorgeous document from Oldfield's performance at the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival, along with "Medley: Conflict/Ommadawn," "QE2 Medley: Taurus 1/Sheba/Mirage," and more of his highly experimental compositions. Established liner note writer Michael Heatley sums up the enigma in his three pages that are included with the six-page booklet: that this is a transition from "bearded studio whizkid to clean-shaven concert attraction." Mike Oldfield is a true rock star in this document, taking the guitar and working it on-stage in a progressive rock format that should have been major competition for more established ensembles Yes and Genesis. Perhaps it was Oldfield's left-of-center approach, resulting in only one instrumental American hit seven years earlier, that stereotyped this classical-rock original. Todd Rundgren got the press, while multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield was just as visionary, and perhaps more dynamic on-stage, as evidenced by this amazing footage. Live at Montreux 1981 is a phenomenal concert, perfectly executed and displaying a sound and approach that make one wonder why this talent wasn't a much, much bigger star. ~ Joe Viglione
