Britain's silent film history is finally emerging from an era of neglect. As Matthew Sweet, writer and presenter of the programme, says, the silent era "is one of the most creative, extravagant, sensational and pleasurable periods of film production in this country."

The film explores these pleasures by drawing extensively on the silent films held by the National Film and Television Archive, and through newly filmed interviews and visits to celebrated silent film locations from Brighton to Blackpool.

  • Interview with Neil Brand, one of the world's foremost silent film composers
  • Short film spoof of 1920s film censorship - Cut It Out (Adrian Brunel, 1925)
  • Stills gallery
