Tommy was arguably the first 'modern musical' and has been the subject of numerous adaptions on stage and even on ice, and tells the story of a psychomatically 'deaf, dumb and blind kid' who becomes the pinball champion of the world.

As a small child, Tommy witnesses the murder of his father by his stepfather Frank Hobbs. His mother Nora and stepfather tell him to forget everything he had seen and heard but the boy takes this instruction to the extreme and stops seeing, hearing or speaking. He finds happiness playing pinball and when he becomes World Champion his senses are restored and he begins to teach others his unique perspective on life, eventually becoming a religious cult figure.

Tommy was filmed to a pre-recorded soundtrack except for the "Pinball Wizard" sequence which features The Who playing in front of the theatre audience. The fans rush the stage at the end of this sequence - a segment that was not scripted but was caused by genuine excitement, particularly exaggerated when Pete Townshend started started to smash his guitar - a trademark of his performances!
